can we avoid cancer?

Can anything be done to avoid cancer 100%?

The answer is NO. There is no way existing medical science can do to guarantee that a person will never have cancer. And anybody, doctor or otherwise, who claims that he can do that is obviously not being forthright, to say the least. Having said that, however, there are several things a person can do to decrease the possibility of cancer recurrence. The most important thing is to have a regular checkup with your doctor. There is such a thing called precancerous lesions, which are not yet cancers but will likely become cancer soon if not eradicated. Your doctor will be able to detect and treat this if it is present. In many cases, these precancerous lesions are not recognized by the patients so that they eventually progressed to real cancer. Those without precancerous lesions may still benefit from a visit to the doctor. For certain cancers there are genetic tests that can predict its likelihood. Your doctor will be able to recommend the appropriate tests and give you the proper counseling as to what to do when the test results come out. On the other hand, there are patients already with cancer but who do not yet manifest it. Your doctor will hopefully be able to detect it at an early stage so that the chance for cure is good. In addition, there are some cancer with certain predisposing factors, e.g., HPV virus for cervical cancer and hepatitis for liver cancers, so an appropriate vaccine will definitely help. There are also certain medicines like tamoxifen that may help prevent cancer, in this case breast cancer, for certain high risk persons. Moreover, your doctor can help tailor strategies to help minimize your overall risk. The other things one can do is to live a healthy life, e.g., eat properly, sleep properly, avoid cigarettes and excessive alcohol, etc.
